Ruth has worked in the Criminal Defence System since 1989, qualifying as a Solicitor in December 1991. She had her own practice in Skipton from 2000 to 2008, where she ran the crime and family departments.

Ruth represents clients both in the Police Station and at the Magistrates Court along with acting as litigator in the Crown Court.

Since moving to Chivers as a Consultant Solicitor in May 2009, she has specialised in Prison Law – under the tutorage of Marcus Farrar. She has represented clients on licence recalls, Parole reviews and at hearings before the Independent Adjudicator for breaching prison rules, where additional days can be added to the prisoners sentence if found guilty. Ruth also advises on Appeals against both conviction and sentence.

A few notable criminal cases that Ruth has been involved in:

  • Appeared in the Court of Appeal on an Attorney General’s Reference in respect of an abuse of trust case where a step-father had consensual relations with his step-daughter (Section 25 Sexual Offence Act 2003)
  • Representing a teacher who indecently assaulted a pupil at his school over a number of years
  • Represented a man who was found legally insane at the time that he brandished a gun at two Community Psychiatric Nurses who had come to visit him in order to dispense his medication.
  • Represented clients in a multi-handed allegation of affray that occurred at a railway station. This case is particularly serious in that the alleged victim was hit by a train during the incident.
  • Represented a Polish national who was accused of conspiring to import 1.7 million cigarettes into the UK.
  • Represented a woman accused of conspiring with her employer, a chartered accountant, to steal from the accountancy firm.
  • Represented a woman accused of murdering her infant child and child neglect.

Ruth has an interest in animal welfare, and Co-Administers a fund raising organisation that provides support and assistance to dog owners who have dogs that have been diagnosed with canine cancer. She can be found walking the dales with her pet dog when not undertaking investigations of the paranormal!
